Felicifia forum

(This is an important discussion as we move forward. - promoted by Seth Baum)

Seth has suggested I take the lead on creating a Felicifia forum. I'm willing in principle, though somewhat daunted. I'd been planning to abuse from the sidelines rather than stick my head in the noose...

If anyone competent wants to take up the project, I'll happily cede it to the, but failing that I need to quickly figure out the basics of forum software etc., so am seeking advice.

Various questions then, for anyone who feels competent enough to answer them:

Jinksy :: Felicifia forum

Ideally of course a free forum with no severe limitations would be nice, but in the online world, price comparisons usually seem like quite a relialbe guide to quality. So I'm also contemplating one of the one-off fee jobs.

Wikipedia's comparison seems useful, but not enormously detailed.

1) Obvious question - does anyone know any free software that's (almost) equally as good as the paid options? (at a glance AEF, phpBB and MyBB look ok, but I'm really not sure what I should be judging by... maybe others are much better)

2) With vBB, how important are the updates ? I don't earn much, so while I could just about scrape together the initial fee, I'm wary of committing to an extra $60 a year.

3) If not free or vBB, I'd prefer a one-off investment to constant payments. Only a couple seem to offer that - WowClassic, WowUltra, WSNforum(?), Invision(?), Burning Board(?), ExpressionEngine Discussion Forums(?). Anything to separate these from the best of the free boards? And if so, anything to choose between them?

4) Do any or all of these things have hidden costs I should know about? By 'hidden' I pretty much mean 'anything not mentioned on Wikipedia'. This is the first time I'll have ever tried to put anything bigger than a photo onto the internet...

5) Related, will I need anything else besides the forum software itself (or will that depend on the forum software)?

6) What else should I be asking that I haven't?

my impressions (0.00 / 0)

Firstly, some general advice: http://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-Forum

as a forum user I've used vbulletin on www.smashboards.com. It is also present on Internet Infidels forum. I've used phpBB on http://richarddawkins.net/forums and on http://forums.xkcd.com/. They're both very clean and user friendly sites.

Question 1: I logged in turn to each of AEF, phpBB and MyBB today to compare them. From my perspective, phpBB was the best. It was the smoothest and cleanest. Probably I also liked it because it was familiar and I realise this isn't a legitimate reason. However, if it is so popular, it seems likely that it will be easy to install too.

AEF irritated me. First, it gave me an activation code which I had to copy paste - I still don't know where - rather than a simple link like the other two. Second, it didn't redirect me when I logged in so I had to log in a few times before I realised I had done so, Thirdly, I don't know where its specs are on wikipedia.

2) If we choose vBulletin, I'll paypal you $50 or $100, sure. However, I don't see (yet?) what makes vBulletin such a great investment . If the popularity of felicifia.org exceeds our expectations and phpBB is not up to scratch, we may realise that we need to move to vBulletin. We might even go down the path of programming a website from scratch. But that situation isn't as offensive to me as the waste of $180 or $240. What do you guys think?

3,4,5,6) Unfortunately I can't really help you here.

If we narrow the options down to a top 3, I can take some screenshots of them so we can draw some direct comparisons.

phpBB is the way to go (0.00 / 0)
I've set up a number of phpBB sites; it's really great software. If you're interested (and haven't configured your forum yet), you can see phpBB sites that I've built at my website: http://www.chrisbeaman.com/portfolio - haven't had much experience with AEF. The free option is fine; another option is to install a CMS that includes forum software as part of its package. You could easily do this with Drupal.

Sorry, I didn't link you properly, perhaps this will work? Not sure if HTML is allowed. Yes?
